kennedy Cup Limerick 1

Kennedy Cup 2014 Review

The NECSL have just returned from their annual trip to the Kennedy Cup. Whilst results were not favourable the 19 players had a great time.

Monday

The first game on Monday saw them come up against a strong Mayo side and after going 1 down in the first 10 minutes they were always chasing the game and despite playing some good football and a spirited display they lost 3-0.

The second game was against West Waterford East Cork (WWEC) and following Mondays loss this became a must win game. The NECSL were a stronger team but failed to convert any of their chances and with 5 minutes to go WWEC counter attacked and grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal.

Tuesday

The team headed into Tuesday evenings last group game against first seeds Wexford with no points and no goals. Their cause wasn’t helped when Wexford took the lead midway through the first half. However, the NECSL didn’t wilt and Killian Clarke equalised with a well taken goal. They continued to push for the winner but to no avail and the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Having finished bottom of the group we were now playing in the Trophy competition and first up were Wicklow in the Qtr Final. There was renewed optimism in the camp following the Wexford game and this shone through when we ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Dylan Keating and 2 from Seosamh Sheerin.

Thursday

Thursday morning was semi final day with Kilkenny the opposition. In a well contested game the NECSL were the better team and played some excellent attacking football but despite being 1-0 and 2-1 up, with goals from Kamil Strachura and Jack McMahon, they conceded 2 late goals.

The consequence of this was a further game, for placing only, against a Midlands side who had suffered the same fate earlier in the day. Again the NECSL started the brightest and took a deserved lead with a goal from Seosamh Sheerin but were pegged back and conceded a second goal just before full time.

A great time was had by all and the effort put in by all 19 players was excellent, well done to each and everyone of them.
