Our 2009 girls set off on their journey up to the Oscar Traynor to play the MGL today. Both teams are battling to come out top of the group.
From the minute the whistle blew, it was a very physical game throughout. With the MGL giving us a tough battle. Our girls kept going and left it 0-0 at halftime.
The second half is when the game started changing and between Hailey Twomey, Ruby Finnegan, Shauna Kate Smyth and Sarah Burke they worked endlessly to try and score a goal. Hailey Twomey then had the ball at her feet in the opposition’s half when she was fouled inside the box and the referee had no choice but to give a penalty. Our centre half Ava Bennett then stepped up to take the penalty. Ava rattled the top corner with an unstoppable shot. This left the girls 1-0 up with 20 minutes to go. After the goal the girls kept working and Emily O’Brien was breaking down all the play in midfield. Sarah Burke then got the ball passed up to her and she did exceptionally well taking on the centre half and scoring a rocket of a goal to extend our lead. The score was then at 2-0 with roughly 5 minutes to play. The MGL still never gave up fighting and kept launching the balAl into our box. Our keeper Zara Farnan then came out to clear the ball to prevent the MGL from scoring. Full time score ended 2-0 to our very own 2009 Girls. All credit to the MGL for the game it was relentless throughout.
Also a massive thank you to all the supporters travelling up to support the girls and also the Oscar Traynor centre for the facilities.
Our girls finished the group stages on maximum points and winning both games.
Outstanding Performance from Emily O’Brien.
