The NECSL U12 ETP squad travelled to Naas today for what turned out to be a tough encounter against strong opposition from the Kildare & District Union League.
Kildare started the game strongly and went 2-0 up within the first two minutes, capitalizing on some hesitation in the NECSL defence. As the first half continued, the NECSL showed great determination to build their confidence and come back into the game. Jake Murtagh came within inches of getting a goal back from a free kick, and Cormac Rafferty was threatening up front. The second half finished with the score still at 2-0.
The NECSL were much brighter in the second half, and looked much more threatening. The team were creating chances with Kyle Cosgrove getting forward well from right back. One of the runs led to a throw in, which was worked across to Adam Donohoe. Adam turned the defender, and won the free kick, which he duly dispatched into the top right hand corner. Kildare scored again, from the penalty spot, to bring the game to 3-1, but the NECSL had more left in the tank. Jamie Fagan burst forward from left back, and played a through ball over the top for Sean Foley, who struck the ball on the volley as it came over his shoulder, and his shot flew in, leaving the keeper with no chance. 3-2.
As the game went into the last few minutes both teams started to tire, and more chances were created, with the NECSL unlucky not to grab one. Kildare were sharper in front of goal, and took two chances to score, wrapping up the victory for them.
Well done to Kildare, they deserved their victory. The NECSL must re-group now and get ready to take on Wexford in two week’s time.
