NECSL Vs Kildare SFAI Inter League 1st Round

The NEC welcomed Kildare to the MDL Grounds last Saturday morning in what turned out to be an enthralling encounter.

The hosts almost took an early lead with only five minutes gone when Jack O’Keefe showed blistering pace to break through the Kildare defence only to see his shot deflected wide by the goal keeper.  It was the visitors, however, who broke the deadlock in the twelfth minute with a break from midfield to make it 0-1.  Kildare controlled much of the first half and held their lead going in at the break.

The second half started much like the first with Kildare scoring early again to make it 0-2.  The introduction of three substitutes seemed to inject life into the NEC team and moments later O’Keefe skipped past two defenders and struck the ball into the far corner of the goal making it 2-1.  With their newly found confidence, the home side began to take control of the match with some very good possession.  It was O’Keefe again, who scored his and the NEC’s second goal fifteen minutes from time with a delicate finish following some clever play from Conor Frayne.

Both sides had chances to win the game, however, with only minutes remaining a back heel from O’Keefe set up Frankie Cullen who cut inside and shot from the edge of the area, rippling the top corner of the net to score a dramatic winning goal for the NEC.

NEC team: L. Kieran, C. Power, L. McNally, D. Hand, E. Buckley. J. Boyne, J. Vaughan, S. Duffy, J. O’Keefe, O. Martyn, F. Cullen. Subs: Karl Breen for Buckley, Conor Frayne for Boyne and Joey Moran for Vaughan.
